Online part time jobs make for some of the best side hustles out there. They’re flexible and pay well, making them a great option for increasing your income.
And the reality is that finding ways to make money can lead to all kinds of amazing things.
You can save up for emergencies.
You can finally take your dream vacation.
You can destroy your debt and stop living with that burden.
You can leave a job you don’t love.
Those are all awesome goals, and finding a side hustle will help you realize them so much faster.
If you want to learn how to make extra money from home and you’re wondering what the best online part time jobs are, this list is for you.
Here are the best online part time jobs to make an extra $1,000 to $2,000 per month:
1. Running Facebook ads for small businesses
When I quit my job as a high school band director to run this site full time, I supplemented my income by running Facebook ads for some local businesses. I learned as much as I possibly could about digital marketing on Facebook and found my first client — the jeweler that made my wife’s engagement ring.
After that client, I found another and another. Just a few months in, something crazy happened… I was out earning what I made as a teacher, and I was doing it all on my own schedule.
As a digital marketer on Facebook, you are creating, testing, and running ad campaigns for businesses.
The reason this is hands down, one of the best online part time jobs is because Facebook has a massive reach that small business owners are just starting to tap into. Big companies have been doing this for a while, but many small business owners lack the resources and time it takes to run an effective ad strategy.
When you learn how to run Facebook ads for local business owners, you’re helping them strategize and grow their businesses. And for the foreseeable future, Facebook will continue to be one of the best platforms for small business owners to increase their visibility and sales.
But the best part? With just a few hours of work each week, each client is worth around $1,000-$1,500 per month, and you can keep scaling your business up with each new client.
If you’re interested in learning how to run ads on Facebook, I teamed up with my friend Mike Yanda (lawyer turned digital marketer who’s now bringing in $30k/month) to create the Facebook Side Hustle Course . In our course, you’ll learn exactly how to find clients, get them to say yes, and run successful ad campaigns.
2. Become a Pinterest virtual assistant
Virtual assistants (VAs) are invaluable assets for many online business owners. They can do a variety of tasks, from scheduling meetings, publishing blog posts, answering emails, managing social media accounts, and posting to Pinterest. I have a couple of virtual assistants at M$M, and they make my life and business run much smoother.
Because Pinterest is an important strategy for bloggers, online stores, and social media influencers, becoming a Pinterest virtual assistant is one of the best part time online jobs for 2020.
For business owners, managing a Pinterest account can be time consuming, and you have to know what you’re doing on Pinterest to see the type of traffic you want.
If you’re interested in becoming a Pinterest virtual assistant, the Pinterest Virtual Assistant Course is an awesome course that teaches you:
- What a Pinterest VA does
- The services you can offer and how much to charge
- How to find and land clients
- How to grow your client relationships
- How to expand your Pinterest VA business
The Pinterest VA course is taught by Kristin Larsen, who have already helped hundreds of online entrepreneurs and bloggers grow their businesses. She estimate that the average client is worth around $500 per month.

3. Teach English online with VIPKid
VIPKid is an online platform for teaching English language skills to Chinese students. The hours are super flexible, you work as much as you want, and VIPKid pays up to $22/hour.
Speaking as a former teacher, this is one of the best online part time jobs for a couple of reasons: there is zero lesson planning and you teach in 25 minute long lessons.
If you’re interested in teaching with VIPKid, you will need a bachelor’s degree, but it doesn’t have to be in English or teaching. You also need to have experience working with kids, but that can be having your own kids, babysitting, working at a summer camp, etc.
4. Freelancing
Freelancing is one of the broadest and most legit online part time jobs of 2020. There are so many different types of freelancing services you can offer, like:
- Graphic design
- Web development
- Writing
- Bookkeeping
- Photography
- Proofreading
- Virtual assistance
- Sound design
- App development
- Film editing
Side hustling as a freelancer means you are self-employed and providing work for your clients. You may be paid on a per hour or per job basis, and you grow your business based on the types of services you offer and your level of experience.
I know a lot of freelancers who start working just a few hours a week and scale their business into a full time job. Word of mouth is a great way to find clients, but you can also use Upwork, Fiverr, or advertise on Facebook or Craigslist.
5. Start a blog
Before I tell you why starting a blog is one of the best online part time jobs, you need to know one very important thing about blogging — it’s a slow business model overall.
Blogging isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. It can take a few months to make your first few bucks.
But, starting a blog is 100% something you can do outside of normal business hours, anyone can start a blog, and the overhead is super low. Once you learn how to monetize your blog, your earning potential is virtually unlimited. Take M$M for example, three years ago I was living on a teacher’s salary, now I’m regularly earning $50,000+ a month from my blog.
Besides potential earnings, blogging is one of the best side hustles because you can blog about anything you want. I blog about personal finance because that’s something I enjoy helping others with, but you could blog about cooking, fitness, dogs, or whatever interests you. You could even legitimately blog about learning how to blog.
If you want to start your own blog, I teamed up with Bluehost to create a completely free installation and setup package for WordPress blogs. It’s called Launch That Blog, and my team takes care of the technical aspects of setting up your blog so you can focus on the most fun parts — creating content and engaging with your readers.
What is a good flexible part time job?
Those five ideas are my top picks for online part time jobs, but there are still a lot of other options out there. If you’re thinking about other possibilities, here’s what to look for:
The best part time jobs are ones you can do whenever and wherever
Online jobs, for the most part, are inherently flexible. As long as you have an internet connection, you can work. You can work outside of your 9-5 job, while you stay at home with your kids, while traveling full time, etc.
There’s a lot of freedom in that kind of flexibility.
Picking your own schedule means you can choose how much time you devote to your side hustle. You’re not tethered to someone else’s schedule. Trust me, that feels amazing.

The best online part time jobs are ones you can grow. To understand what I mean, think about your current job. You have a set number of hours, you might be salaried, you might not be qualified for higher earning positions, etc. While the occasional raise can help your financial situation, it probably won’t be enough to help you reach all of your financial goals.
A good side hustle or part time job increases your earning potential, while also being something that can one day grow into a larger opportunity. Take freelancing as a web designer. You can spend a few hours a week working outside of your normal job, but once you have enough clients, you might be able to leave your normal job altogether.
Here’s what else that web designer freelancing gig could grow into:
- Building your own web design business
- Creating a course that teaches others how to design websites
- Hiring other freelancers to work for you
The same can be said for most freelancing side hustles.
The best online part time jobs pay well
The reality is that with so many online options out there, you’re going to run across a number that don’t pay well. Taking online surveys is a really good example. They’re super flexible, but surveys only pay around $1-$2/hour.
Sure, every little bit helps when you’re trying to pay off debt or start investing, but why settle for so little?
VIPKid pays up to $22/hour. It takes around 3-5 hours per week to run Facebook ads for one client, and that pays $1,000-$1,500/month. Freelancers can charge hourly rates of $25-$100+ depending on the work.
Now, this isn’t easy money. It takes time to set up some of these gigs, but when you put the time in, you’re compensated well for your efforts.
Bootstrapping
This means you can get your side hustle off the ground without a huge financial investment and with an incredibly low overhead — why online part time jobs make some of the best side hustles.
There’s little to no expensive training or fancy equipment. The benefit being that you’re not spending a ton of time recouping your initial investment. You’re earning money from the get go.
My final word on the best online part time jobs for 2020
I started this post telling you why finding a side hustle is so important, and it really comes down to thinking about what you want out of your life.
Do you really want student loan debt hanging over your head for 10+ more years, or do you want to be debt free?
Do you want to be struggling towards retirement or retire early?
Do you want to live with less financial stress?
Finding one of the best part time jobs online can put you on a better path, one that points you towards financial freedom.

Is there a reason you put a line through the link to Upwork or was that supposed to be an underlined link like Fiverr? Inquiring minds…
Millennial Money Man
Fixed! The site thought it was broken for whatever reason (even though it wasn’t). The joys of running a website for a living 🙂

I totally love these side hustles. Doing POD is also great from what I hear and there’s also Kindle. I guess the one that is easier to start with is Kindle and that can also be scaled. I do agree with you blogging isn’t a get rich scheme. It takes a lot of effort and work to do it because there are so many things that can go wrong. But thanks for another great post as always.

First, let me say that I am digging your website. Second, I’ll add in here two side hustles that have worked for us that I never see listed anywhere.
1. Pet bather for a private groomer.
I used to work for a groomer that would double book herself for Saturdays and she would pay me $200 cash to bathe all the dogs she would groom. It was pretty sweet because I love dogs.
2. Teaching CPR classes
This is my husband’s side hustle. He is a paramedic but you don’t need to be a paramedic to teach classes!
Thanks for the post!

Glad you like the site, and these are great suggestions!
