Learning how to make extra money has legitimately changed my life. That’s not an exaggeration at all. I went from a frustrated high school band teacher to someone who genuinely loves what they do.
Making extra money gives you the freedom to change your life, too. You can pay off debt, retire early, quit a job you hate, or just have a little more room in your monthly budget.
And while there are lots of ways to make more money – 42 ideas on this list alone – you have to adopt a new mindset if you want to really learn how to make extra money and change your life. Let me explain…
You have to be open to new ideas.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this in the past, “I know what you’re going to tell me.”
I’ve heard that for making money, saving money, paying down debt, etc. People have preconceived notions about what those personal finance principles mean, so they shut down new ideas before they even hear about them.
Go in with an open mind, and you might find something surprising.
Share what you’re doing with others.
A lot of people are still afraid to talk about money with their friends and family. But talking about how you’re making extra money can be really beneficial for everyone. You can hold one another accountable, motivate each other, and learn some new ideas that you haven’t explored.
Be willing to modify your schedule.
Listen, everyone feels maxed out on a regular basis. Between work, your partner, maybe kids, and various other obligations, it can feel like you just don’t have the time to make extra money, but you do.
I worked as a band director from 6:45 am - 7:00 pm or later Monday through Friday. I came home and taught myself about blogging and digital marketing. It sucked some days, but it worked.
There are ways to find time in your day. Maybe you work on your side hustle for an hour before work, on your lunch break, or before you go to bed. You’re making a time investment in your future.
Find a reason why.
Your “why” is what motivates you, and I’ll be honest, this is the kind of life advice I might have laughed about in the past. But now I get it.
We get one shot to live the life we want. I didn’t want to live with debt, and I wanted more than I could get out of a teacher’s salary. That’s why I made sacrifices, and I had to use my why to keep me focused and moving forward.
So right now, I want you to start thinking about your why. What will motivate you to make extra money? There’s no reason too big or small.
Once you’ve got your why, find one thing on this list that you can do today.
How to make extra money | Over 40 ways to make more money
My two favorites ways to make extra money
These two ideas are M$M approved because it’s how I’ve been able to make extra money, leave my day job, and find financial independence.
1. Run Facebook ads for small businesses
This is one of my favorite ways to make extra money because it’s how I supplemented my income after quitting my job as a high school band director to run this site full time. My first client was actually the jeweler who sold me my wife’s engagement ring.
After a few months, I had a handful of digital marketing clients, was working less than 40 hours a week, and I was out-earning what I made as a teacher.
But what does it mean to run Facebook ads for small businesses?
You already know that Facebook has a massive reach: over 2 billion people are on Facebook. But small business owners are only just starting to tap into that resource. Big companies have been doing this for a while, but many small business owners lack the resources and time it takes to run an effective Facebook ad strategy.
Running Facebook ads is strategically creating and running ad campaigns for small businesses so they can grow their business. You’re helping business owners get their message out and reach new clients.
Once you’ve landed a client, you can manage ads for them in just about 2-3 hours per week and make an extra $1,000-$1,500 per month.
If this sounds like a side hustle you’re interested in, check out the Facebook Side Hustle Course. I teamed up with my friend Mike Yanda (lawyer turned digital marketer who makes $30k/month while working as a stay-at-home dad) to create this course that teaches you how to run Facebook ads, find clients, and scale your business.
I legitimately love watching students who are just starting out and growing their business.
2. Start a blog
Like I mentioned, I quit my stable and full-time job as a high school band director to run this site. It was an insane move by most people’s standards, but I did it because I knew I wanted more from life than I could get on a teacher’s salary.
I had no clue how much blogging would change my life. Blogging is how I went from a teacher to a 7-figure online business owner in less than five years.
Blogging has the potential to change your life too. Now, every blogger has a different trajectory, and it’s a very slow business model overall. Read: It is not a get-rich-quick scheme.
It took me months to earn a few dollars from my site, and even longer to earn a real living (why I ran Facebook ads on the side).
But I stuck with it because I genuinely loved what I was doing. It’s also extremely flexible – you can grow your blog in the evenings, on your lunch break, and on the weekends.
So if you have a message to share and are motivated to put in the work, starting a blog is a great way to make extra money.
I highly recommend starting a WordPress site hosted through Bluehost (as little as $2.95/month when you use my exclusive link) because you’ll have complete control of your content and how you monetize your site.
If you feel like the setup and installation is a little too overwhelming, check out Launch That Blog. It’s completely free when you go with Bluehost.
How to make extra money online
These online options are flexible ways to earn extra money. You can work from home and pick your own hours, which makes them great options if you’re at home raising your kids or looking to side hustle outside of your day job.
3. Teach English online with VIPKid
VIPKid is an online platform where tutors teach English to young Chinese students. The hours are flexible: because of the time difference, many VIPKid teachers work before they go to work or in the evenings.
You can make $14-$22/hour teaching for VIPKid. You need at least a bachelor’s degree, but it doesn’t have to be in English, and you don’t have to be a certified teacher. You will need some experience working with kids, like raising your own kids, working at a daycare, babysitting, or working at a summer camp.
If you’re looking for more side hustle ideas for teachers, check out Best Side Hustles for Teachers to Make More Money During the School Year.
4. Sell on eBay
You can make extra money selling all sorts of things on eBay – collectibles, clothes, electronics, home goods, video games, antiques or vintage items, sporting goods, and more.
It’s best to start with things you already have at home. This way you can learn how to use the site before investing your own money in things that you might be able to flip for even higher profits.
And if you’re interested in learning how to sell on eBay, check out my article How to Sell on eBay (And Actually be Successful). You will learn:
- How to build your seller’s profile
- Picking a niche
- Researching your listings
- How to write listings that sell
- The value in honest photos
- Setting your price
- How to complete sales
There are also some great tips from M$M readers who are successful eBay sellers – one of them made over $85,000 in one year selling on eBay!
5. Create a course to sell
One of the funny things about going from teacher to blogger is that I’ve come back around to teaching, but this time it’s through online courses. I legitimately loved teaching… it was the school politics that bothered me.
Creating an online course gives you the opportunity to make extra money as you share your knowledge with others. And you might be surprised by the kinds of things you can teach. Here are a few examples of online courses you can find on Teachable (this is the platform I use for my courses):
- Watercoloring Painting for Beginners
- Triathlon Training
- How to Declutter Your House
- Beginning Gardening
- How to Buy, Grow, and Sell Small Companies
- Photography Masterclass
- Email Marketing Magic
- Fingerstyle Guitar for Beginners
How well your course sells will depend on the demand for what you’re teaching, and courses with marketable skills tend to do better. The number one tip for success is to provide value to your students. Know exactly what you’re talking about and give them more than they came for.
It takes some work to make extra money with an online course – you have to create, market, and launch your course -- but you’re in complete control of a product you’ve created while earning fairly passive income.
Laptop Empires has some excellent information about creating and selling an online course at How to Structure Your Course & Create a System to Sell the Hell Out of it All Year Long.
6. Start consulting
Clarity.fm is a place where you can leverage your expertise to make extra money as a consultant. You’re answering questions and giving advice to people who want to learn from you.
Here’s how it works:
- Someone comes to Clarity.fm and searches for an expert on a specific topic
- They find you and schedule a call
- You both receive confirmation from Clarity
- You get on your call and receive payment for your time
You will have to meet Clarity’s list of expert standards and fill out an application. Clarity will review it and assess it based on demand and the completeness of your profile. If they approve you, rates start at $60/hour but averaging closer to $100-$300/hour.
You can consult for Clarity on a huge list of topics related to business, funding, product and design, technology, management, and a variety of other industries.
Even Shark Tank’s Mark Cuban makes extra money with Clarity, and his consultation fee is $166.67/minute.
7. Sell on Amazon FBA
Amazon FBA (Fulfillment By Amazon) is when normal people source items to sell on Amazon, ship them to Amazon, and then Amazon takes care of selling and shipping them. There are lots of things to sell through Amazon FBA, but the top categories are books, baby items, electronics, and workout gear.
New Amazon sellers may be eligible for free shipping, storage, and return processing. Check out Amazon FBA to learn how to get started.
8. Start a YouTube channel
Starting a YouTube can be a really low-cost business idea – you can honestly start a channel with just the camera on your phone. And what’s crazy is how much money some YouTubers make. The highest-grossing YouTuber made $26 million, and he’s only 8 years old!!
Kind of makes you rethink your life choices, doesn’t it?
In all seriousness, starting a YouTube channel is one way to make extra money, but it’s as slow a business model as blogging is.
Aside from creating content, you will have to reach 4,000 view hours and 1,000 subscribers before you can start earning money from ads. Then you can start growing your YouTube income with affiliates, sponsorship deals, and by creating and selling your own merchandise.
You can learn more about how to make money on Youtube in How Much Do YouTubers Really Make?
How to make extra money offline
If you don’t want to spend more hours in front of a computer, these offline options give you flexible ways to make extra cash.
9. Make more at your current job
One of the best ways to make extra money is to ask for a raise at your current job, and this is especially true if you love your job. Besides seeing an increase in your monthly pay, you’ve upped the baseline for future raises, and even costs of living raises.
If you’ve never negotiated a raise, here are some tips:
- Make sure it’s the right time. If your company or the economy isn’t doing well, you might want to wait. Good times are after you’ve been given new responsibilities or after you’ve successfully completed a large project.
- Research your position and pay. How much is your job worth? You can use job sites like Glassdoor or Salary.com to see what other people in your position and location get paid.
- Keep track of your responsibilities. This is a preparation step that you should start a few months before you ask for a raise. It will help you prove your value if you’re asked.
- Be confident. You should practice your pitch before you go in, and avoid any personal stuff. It will help you seem calm and confident.
You can also check out if more education or training will lead to higher pay, and some companies are willing to pay for it. But if they don’t, weigh up the cost with the bump in your pay.
10. Start a landscaping side gig
Landscaping work includes mowing lawns, weeding, trimming bushes, pulling weeds, planting flowers, and more. It’s hard work where you are definitely trading time for money, but it can be really fulfilling for people who like to work outside.
Craigslist, Facebook, and Nextdoor are good places to advertise your services. You could even go door-to-door in certain neighborhoods to introduce yourself and advertise your work.
Depending on where you live, you can earn $30-$80 for lawn mowing and more if you offer extra landscaping services like edging or leaf blowing.
11. Deliver food
Delivery services are a convenient way for people to get meals and groceries delivered right to their front door, and there are a number of services out there where you can make $15-$20/hour.
- DoorDash delivers from grocery stores and restaurants. Learn more at DoorDash Driver Review (And How to Earn More Than Average).
- Postmates is known for delivering anything, from takeout to video game consoles. Read DoorDash vs. Postmates: Which is a Better Side Hustle? to learn more.
- Instacart Instacart is the go-to grocery delivery service for many people. Learn what to expect Instacart Shopping Side Hustle: How Much Do Instacart Shoppers Make?
DoorDash Disclaimer: Actual earnings may differ and depend on factors like number of deliveries completed, time of day, location, and expenses. Hourly pay is calculated using average Dasher payouts while on a delivery (from the time you accept an order until the time you drop it off) over a 90 day period and includes compensation from peak pay, tips, and other incentives.
12. Flip furniture
I’m sure you’ve seen furniture sitting out on the curb as trash. That stuff usually just needs a few minor repairs before it’s in good shape. I think most people just don’t want to take the time to do the work themselves.
With a fresh coat of paint, some sanding and staining, or maybe new hardware, you can turn that curbside trash into sellable furniture. What I love about this way to make extra money is that your inventory cost is so low.
You can sell your flips on Facebook Marketplace or local buy/sell/swap groups. And there are actually people who have made a full-time income from flipping furniture.
13. Flip items for a profit
Similar to the last idea, you can also learn how to make extra money by buying and flipping things you’ve found at garage sales, flea markets, thrift stores, and more. One couple even made $79,000 flipping things, and they were only working 10-15 hours a week. They focused on items that are high profit/low volume to keep their working hours down. You can learn more about this side hustle in this free 75-minute webinar Flea Market Flipper: Learn the Art of Buying & Selling.
14. Find gigs on Craigslist
Craigslist is one of the original ways to find odd jobs listed on the internet. I just searched my local Craigslist and found gigs for:
- $50 to take photos of a real estate listing
- $40 to cut up a fallen tree and haul it off
- House cleaner wanted for $15/hour
- Seamstress needed to sew facemasks, $3/mask
- Airbnb property assistant for $13/hour
Vet each gig before you go into it: make sure you know where you’re going and get details about who you are doing the work for. I would also get an agreement on what you’ll be paid before you start working. Don’t accept checks, cashier’s checks, wire transfers, or other unconventional payments.
Whenever my wife and I go out of town, we rely on a pet sitter to come and stay with our pets. It takes a special person to tolerate our dog Strider, and now that we’ve found them, we’ll be using them for as long as possible.
You can build relationships like that on Rover – an online platform that is dedicated to connecting pet owners with dog walkers and pet sitters in their area. This goes unsaid, but you have to love pets and feel comfortable around them for this side hustle.
Pay varies depending on where you live. You’ll be paid more if you live in an urban area, where you can earn $25 per walk or $70 for an overnight stay.
Rover can help you find clients, but you can also list your services on social media. Because trust is such a big part of this side hustle, referrals go a long way.
If you’re interested in signing up for Rover, learn how to set up your profile and list your services at Rover App Review: Get Paid to Walk Dogs.
16. Become a tasker on TaskRabbit
TaskRabbit is a site where people in your area can find “Taskers” to help them do things around their house. And you can make extra money by doing one-off jobs for things like:
- Assembling IKEA furniture
- Light installation
- Grocery delivery
- Laundry services
- Minor home repairs
- Yard cleanup and removal
17. Work as a tutor
If there is a subject that you know well and can teach to others, tutoring is a great way to make extra money. I know this because when I was working as a teacher, I learned that parents are always looking for tutors for math, science, writing, foreign languages, musical instruments, and more.
Tutoring offers pretty decent pay – around $30-$60/hour depending on where you live.
If you can do SAT or ACT prep, you can earn $45-$100/hour. You can find tutoring jobs by connecting with local schools, advertising your services on social media, or through an online tutoring platform like Wyzant.
18. Become a Rideshare driver
This has made rideshare companies a popular way to get around, and a great way to make extra money. You can also set your own hours, and drivers I’ve talked to seem to genuinely love meeting new people.
To learn what rideshare driving is like and what you can expect to make, check out Is Driving For Uber Worth It in 2020? 6 Things to Know Before Jumping In.
19. Deliver for Amazon Flex
Working for Amazon Flex is kind of like rideshare driving – you’re using your car to make extra money and pick the hours you drive, but you’re delivery packages, not people.
Amazon Flex drivers average $18-$25/hour delivering packages for Amazon services like Prime Now, Amazon Fresh, and Amazon Restaurant. You schedule your working time in 3 to 6 hour-long blocks, which you can set days in advance or on the day-of.
How to make extra money as a freelancer
Freelancing is a great way to make extra money because it’s the type of side hustle that you can scale into a full-time job. Most freelancers work for a variety of clients, but some land long-term contract jobs that provide a little more financial security as they grow their business.
20. Become a freelance writer
Freelance writing is a really broad field because you can work for clients in nearly every kind of niche doing jobs like:
- Marketing campaigns
- Blog posts
- Email newsletters
- Online and print articles
- Catalog descriptions
- Web copy
- Grant writing
- Technical writing
You get to work when and where you want and set competitive rates that help you grow your business. Most writers eventually find a niche they enjoy and stick with that as they grow their business. For example, I have a freelance writer who helps me manage my workload, and she’s grown her side hustle into a full-time job working for personal finance bloggers.
A background in English, writing, or journalism can help, but not all writing jobs require a degree. You can learn how to get started at How to Become a Freelance Writer: The Ultimate Guide for 2020.
21. Work as a virtual assistant
Well before I hired a freelance writer, I hired a virtual assistant (VA) to take care of some of the day-to-day work involved in running a blog. Its stuff that doesn’t have to be done by me, like scheduling posts, billing, inbox management, and more. She also helps me stay focused and on task.
It's not an exaggeration to say that I couldn’t run this site without my VA.
I know so many entrepreneurs who feel the same way I do, because we need organized people to help us run our businesses. If you’re up for the responsibility, have good time management skills, and are a good communicator, check out the course 30 Days or Less to Virtual Assistant Success.
22. Become a Pinterest VA
This is a more specialized kind of virtual assistant who helps business owners strategize and grow their business using Pinterest. You can make extra money as a Pinterest Virtual Assistant doing things like:
- Creating pins
- Optimizing images
- Developing a Pinning schedule
- Doing keyword research
Check out How to Make Money on Pinterest in 2020 (Earn $1,000 Extra Per Month!) to learn more.
23. Make extra money as a proofreader
Proofreaders are responsible for polishing written content for bloggers, content writers, website owners, and more. Now, this isn’t for everyone because you’ll need to be amazing at spotting spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes. But if you’re good at that sort of thing, proofreading is a flexible way to make extra money.
Learn more at Proofreading Jobs: Make Money Pointing Out Mistakes – this article includes a great course to help you learn high-level proofreading skills and start your business.
24. Find more freelance work on Fiverr
Fiverr is an online platform where freelancers can connect with potential clients. You could use it to find work for any of the freelancing jobs I just mentioned, but you can also list all types of freelancing work on Fiverr. Here are the 10 most popular freelance services on Fiverr:
- Logo design
- Customizing WordPress sites
- Creating whiteboard and animated explainers
- Social media marketing
- Data entry
- Designing book covers
Seriously, if you have a marketable skill, Fiverr is worth checking out. You can learn more about how Fiverr works at How to Make Money on Fiverr in 2020.
Creative ways to make extra money
If you’re artsy, crafty, or musically inclined and want to cash in on those skills, here are four options to make extra money.
25. Teach people how to make and create
Many of these “how to make extra money” lists leave out creative people who are good at making things with their hands. And while some people focus on making and selling things, it’s hard to recoup your material and time costs to make a liveable wage.
Rather than selling things, teaching others gives you an opportunity to make more. You can teach people to:
- Make jewelry
- Paint with watercolors
- Woodworking skills
- Knitting or crocheting
- Hand lettering techniques
- Cake decoration
The list is endless, and there’s actually good money out there. I have someone on my team who makes $100/hour teaching people how to knit, and my VA makes extra money designing logos and digital illustrations.
You can advertise your services on social media, in local buy/sell craft groups, or reach out to local craft stores to see if they’re looking for teachers.
26. Create digital printables
Printables are things like cards, gift tags, wine labels, stickers for party favors, checklists, wall art, and more. The idea is to create digital images that can be sold on Etsy, then downloaded and printed.
This calendar below is an example:
This is a surprisingly passive way to make extra money because once you’ve created the digital file, you can sell virtually unlimited copies of it. And Etsy gives you a hands-off way to list and sell your products.
The E Printables Side Hustle Course from Gold City Ventures teaches what kinds of printables do well, how to make them, how to list them on Etsy, how to market them, and more.
27. Write an ebook
Self-publishing ebooks has become a popular way to make extra money because self-publishing breaks down the barriers that come with traditional publishing. You don’t have to find a publisher, work under deadlines, or negotiate your contract. You retain complete control of your work.
Kindle Direct Publishing is the go-to self-publishing platform for many new writers.
28. Teach music lessons
When I was working as a high school band director, a bunch of my students took private music lessons. They got one-on-one support and became much better musicians because of it.
And for people who know how to play an instrument really well, it’s a great way to make some extra money. You can realistically make $30-$60/hour depending on where you live and your experience.
Advertising on social media is a good way to grow your client base, but I’d also contact the music programs at your local schools. A lot of school music programs keep a list of local teachers on hand for parents.
How to make extra money while you shop
This section covers apps and websites that pay you cash back for shopping like you normally do. You’re not going to get rich, but these are low stress, easy ideas.
Ibotta works with over 1,500 brands and retailers and pays you cash back on purchases you make at the grocery store, home improvement stores, travel expenses, clothing retailers, and more. Ibotta also has a Google Chrome extension that you can download and use to earn cash back as you shop online.

Paribus is an app that looks at purchases you’ve already made, and if you missed a coupon or the price drops in a certain amount of time, Paribus works with the company to get money back for you.
For example: If you just bought a brand new fridge, and the price drops $100 on that fridge in the next couple of weeks, Paribus helps you get that $100. Paribus is free to use and doesn’t take a cut of the refund.
But is it legit?
Yes, Paribus is legit. However, you are giving Paribus access to your email inbox the app can scan it for relevant data: names of merchants, products, prices of products, and dates of purchase. It only analyzes emails for very specific kinds of information.
If Paribus notices that there is an opportunity to get money back to you, they send an email to the company and initiate a refund.
Learn more about how it works at Paribus Review: Legit, Safe, and Easy App to Save More Money.
Rakuten, formerly known as eBates, is a cash back site where you can earn up to 40% back on purchases you make online. Rakuten makes a commission for sending you to one of its partner sites (there are over 2,500 retailers that have partnered with Rakuten), and then share the commission with you.
The offers regularly change, but here are a few current ones:
- 15% cash back at Adidas
- 6% cash back at Gap
- 5% cash back at Petsmart
- $75 cash back with Verizon
- 3% cash back at Walgreens
- 15% cash back at 1.800.Contacts
Rakuten sends you a check each quarter or deposits money into your PayPal account.
Passive ways to make extra money
Passive income is when you aren’t trading time for money. You have to make an investment to start – the ones on this list all take a financial investment – but once your passive income stream is up and running, it takes minimal work to maintain it.
32. Invest your spare change with Acorns
Micro-investing is when you invest with small amounts of money, even spare change. If you haven’t started investing yet, micro-investing is an approachable way to get started.
Acorns is one really popular app, and it’s become known for something called Round-Ups. This is when you link a debit card to your Acorns account, and when you make a purchase with that card, Acorns rounds up your transaction to the next dollar amount and invests the difference.
This platform also works as a Robo-advisor, which means it decides how to invest your money for you based on your risk tolerance and time in the market. The result is a diverse portfolio of ETFs (exchange-traded funds) that’s built to match your needs.
Acorns offers subscription-based pricing on two different account levels, starting at $3 per month, and up to $5 per month.
- Acorns Personal – $3/month: Includes a personal investment account, tax-advantaged retirement account, and access to a checking account option. Acorns Checking is a no-fee checking account with access to over 55,000 fee-free ATMs.
- Acorns Family – $5/month: In addition to personal, retirement, and checking accounts, this plan comes with custodial investment accounts for children.
Subscription fees are for accounts under $1 million, and when you hit the million-dollar mark, pricing changes to 0.01%

33. Start Stashing
Stash is another micro-investing platform, but Stash is a little different. You can still invest your spare change and use its portfolio builder to select which ETFs to invest in, but Stash gives you the option to pick your own investments.
There are dozens of themed ETFs so you can align your investments with your values and interests. Here are a few of the themed ETFs that you can invest in with Stash:
- American Innovators (U.S. based tech companies) is the Stash name for Vanguard Information Technology ETF, ticker symbol VGT
- Clean & Green (companies with clean and renewable energy) is the Stash name for the iShares Global Clean Energy ETF, ticker symbol ICLN
- Women Who Lead (female-focused companies, leadership and charitable work) is the Stash name for SPDR SSGA Gender Diversity Index ETF, ticker symbol SHE
- All That Glitters (precious metals) is the Stash name for Aberdeen Standard Physical Precious Metals Basket Shares ETF, ticker symbol GLTR
- Do the Right Thing (companies who focus on positive environmental, social, and/or governance impact) is the Stash name for iShares MSCI USA ESG Select Fund, ticker symbol SUSA
Stash has three different account levels starting at $1/month for a personal investment account to $9/month which also comes with custodial accounts, a retirement account, and debit card access.

34. Invest with Betterment
Started in 2008, Betterment is the first widely accessible Robo-advisor platform, using sophisticated algorithms to generate the best asset allocation for your future financial needs.
Betterment feels much closer to a traditional brokerage, offering financial planning packages and a wide range of features, including:
- Daily tax-loss harvesting on all taxable accounts
- Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Portfolio
- Goldman Sachs Smart Beta Portfolio
- BlackRock Target Income Portfolio
- Flexible portfolios for investors with at least $100,000 invested
But Betterment is still approachable for people who are learning how to invest because there’s no minimum account balance and Betterment charges 0.25% annually.
35. Invest in an REIT
Real estate investment trusts (REITs) are how average people invest in commercial real estate. You put in a lump-sum, upfront investment, and once the project is funded and turning a profit, you get a return.
Fundrise is an investment platform specifically for REITs, and lets you start investing in real estate for as little as $500. They’ve been around since 2014, and investors have seen historical annual returns of 8-12%.
To learn more, read Fundrise Review 2019: Commercial Real Estate Investing for All.
36. Move your money into a high-yield account
High-yield savings accounts give your savings the chance to make extra money for you. Rather than earning 0.03% at your current bank, a high-yield account can earn 1.4% back or more.
The difference is that most people have their money in brick and mortar banks that have high overhead costs – think branches, tellers, etc. Online banks don’t have those same costs, so they can pass the savings along to their customers in the form of higher than average interest rates.
Here are 8 of the best online savings accounts now and tips for picking the right one.
Make extra money with your phone
What did we do before smartphones? Seriously… they give us directions, play music, make it easy to connect with family, and you can use them to make extra money.
37. Trim your bills
Trim is a multipurpose financial health app that does budgeting, cancels unused subscriptions, and negotiates for lower rates on your cable, internet, or phone bills. Yes, you can do some of those things on your own, but there are a lot of people out there who just don’t.
It’s free to use Trim for budgeting and canceling subscriptions, but you pay Trim if they are able to negotiate for lower rates on your bills.
Learn more at Trim App Review 2020 | An Easy Way to Save Money on Bills.
38. Share your opinion with Survey Junkie
Let me be honest with you, I have mixed feelings about survey sites. Taking online surveys is a mindless way to make extra money, but you don’t make very much with them -- be aware of that before you get started.
Okay, now that I’ve gotten that out of the way… Survey Junkie is a 100% legit online survey site that pays people to answer market research surveys. You earn points that you can convert to cash via PayPal or direct bank transfer, or online gift cards to Amazon or Target.
Survey Junkie is mindless, mindless money. You can take surveys while watching Netflix, waiting in line at the grocery store, or at the doctor’s office.

There are a lot of ways to make extra money with the Swagbucks app. You can earn money back while shopping online, taking surveys, playing games, or watching videos. And it’s such a popular site that users have already made over $400,000,000 with Swagbucks.
Swagbucks pays in points that convert to cash. And while you’re not going to get rich with Swagbucks, you can earn some easy money doing simple things – shopping online via the Swagbucks portal is one of the higher-earning options.
Swagbucks also has a referral program that pays you points when people sign up through your unique Swagbucks link. You earn a bonus when they sign up for a percentage of any points they earn.

40. Sell your stuff
There are a ton of great apps for selling stuff from around your house. Here are some of my top picks:
- Decluttr: This app is free to use and specifically for tech stuff, like game consoles, tablets, old cell phones, and more.
- Poshmark: Sell gently used clothing and accessories on this app.
- Letgo: Get connected with local buyers in your area and sell virtually anything online.
- Chairish: An app for selling vintage and contemporary home decor and furniture.
- Facebook: Sell on Facebook Marketplace or use local buy/sell/swap groups.
41. Sell unused gift cards
If you’re like me, you have a drawer in your house with a bunch of random gift cards that are partially used or ones you’ll never use. Instead of letting them go to waste, you can sell them through the Raise app to make extra money
You can find out the balance of your cards with Raise, then list them for sale on the app. You’re paid via Direct Deposit, PayPal, or check once they sell.
The final word on how to make extra money
At the beginning of this article, I asked you to think about what will motivate you to make extra income, then I asked you to find one thing on this list that you can start today. Did you do that?
Maybe your reason is to get rid of your student loan debt, and you’re going to do that by working as a freelance writer. Or you want to retire by the time you’re 40, so you’re going to start a digital ad agency with Facebook ads.
Now it’s time to get to work. Your future financial self will thank you.
