What's up Debt De$troyers?? I'm REALLY excited to announce that I've partnered up with SALT (SaltMoney.org) to help millennials kick debt's collective butt this year! 🙂
I still remember the day I opened up the letter from Sallie Mae. If you have student loans, you know what “the letter” is all about (it sucks). Basically, I thought I would have around $20,000ish in student loan debt when I was done with college. It turned out that it was $40,000 and payments were due right after the grace period. Oopsies.
My story is like a lot of people that went through college in the early 2000's.
I had heard my entire public school life that college was the only way to get ahead. When the time came I had to take out student loans to pay for tuition and living expenses, but I had no idea how to manage them or really money in general.
So needless to say – when I got that letter after I graduated…I was crushed that I owed so much.
You're probably thinking: “Why the heck didn't you pay more attention to your loans during college?” The honest answer is that I have no idea. I never claimed to be the smartest guy in the room. I just assumed it would all work out after I got my diploma.
There is a silver lining to the story though. I worked my butt off, sacrificed, and destroyed my loans pretty quickly and am now debt free…but I had a bit of an advantage. I was fortunate to meet some really smart people that guided me towards financial freedom. Not everyone has that resource though.
Now my mission is to provide the same opportunity for everyone that has to deal with student loans. Information is the best power you'll ever have when it comes to battling debt.
So where does the #SALTsquad fit in?
- I love saying I'm in a squad. It makes me feel like I'm not in my late 20's anymore.
- My partnership with SALT is about providing the kind of advice that I was lucky enough to get, but for ALL millennials.
- I might be able to actually use and pull off using the word fleek. Probably not though.
- There are some really awesome financial homies on the squad. It's basically just a bunch of cool money nerds teaming up to help other people. Pretty sweet right?
I'll be sharing content from the team at Saltmoney.org, and they will share my content with their existing readers. It's something that will benefit a lot of people that need help managing and paying off their loans, or even avoiding them altogether. Also – it's totally free to check out their resources. You just have to create a free account so they can email content to you. No biggie.
Now let me introduce you to the SALT community:
SALT is a program created by American Student Assistance, which is a non-profit that has been helping student loan holders for 60 years by providing [email protected]$$ content to help people figure out their student loan situation.
They already have 1 million members and counting. THAT IS 7 DIGITS PEOPLE. In addition – they have teamed up with over 300 colleges and community organizations all over the country.
Their resources are free. Operating as a non-profit allows them to provide killer resources without a paid subscription. You'll get advice on budgeting, scholarships, jobs, internships, student loan management, and a ton more. It's like this site on steroids with less sarcasm.
SALT also operates on the idea that you aren't an idiot for going to college like so many people like to say online. SALT believes college is an investment in yourself and is a gateway to future opportunities.
Lastly, SALT is also a no judgement zone, and people aren't going to hit you with “well you shouldn't have gone to college if you didn't want to have student loans“. I literally hate it when people say that. Ugh.
So what do you need to do now?
As little or as much as you want. You can go check out their site here and start looking around for content that helps you, or you can sit back and wait for me to share articles on my social media channels and this site.
If you are wondering – I'm not getting paid for joining the #SALTsquad (you know how I like the $$$'s). 🙂 This is something I'm volunteering my time, effort, and reach so I can give back to awesome people like you who put up with me and want to be financially independent.
Be sure to look out for content from me marked with #SALTsquad in the coming weeks!
Live differently. Your bank accounts will thank me later. ~M$M
And yes. I took actual sea salt and crafted that featured photo at the top in true hipster form. It's authentic. My wife laughed at me…a lot. That should tell you how serious I am about this thing.
