Will online survey sites really pay me to take surveys? That question comes up over and over again when talking about online surveys. They seem almost too good to be true, but online survey platforms are market research companies that want honest feedback from consumers — that’s why they pay!

Let’s dig into how much money you can make with online surveys, what are the best online survey sites (these ones all pay well!), and tips to get paid for surveys.

Can You Actually Make Money for Taking Surveys?

Yes, taking online surveys is a legitimate way to make money, and many surveys sites offer cash, gift cards, or other perks to those who provide feedback that’s used for market research purposes.

To understand why online surveys pay for your insights and opinions, it’s important to realize that survey companies are essentially market research companies. They work with different brands to collect market research data that’s used to create better products and services, identify new opportunities, launch more effective advertising campaigns, and so on.

Brands pay survey companies to design surveys that ask consumers about their wants and needs. The questions also look for specific demographic points, how consumers interact with products and services, about brand perception, and more.

Survey sites pay users real money because they’re being paid to collect valuable market research data.

How Much You Really Get Paid to Take Surveys Online

The reality is that online surveys don’t pay well overall, and you can make anywhere from $0.50 to $5/hour. So while yes, you can get paid to take surveys, you are making far less than minimum wage.

Because surveys pay so little, it’s important to decide is taking online surveys is worth it for you.

The benefits are that online surveys are incredibly easy and flexible. Many platforms have apps so you can take a quick survey while you’re waiting in the carpool line or at the doctor’s office. Think of surveys as a paid alternative to playing games on your phone.

On the flip side, there are side hustles that pay significantly higher, still have a low barrier to entry, and are also ridiculously flexible, like:

The point is: there are considerably higher paying alternatives to online surveys. But if your goal is to find something that’s mindless, easy, flexible, and pays a little extra cash, let’s make sure you have the best options available…

Tips When Taking Online Surveys for Money

Your time is valuable, and these tips will help you make the most of your time if you want to money money with online surveys:

  • Always be honest: Falsifying information is never a good idea, and survey sites need people who will provide their honest feedback. Plus, you can be kicked off a survey site for being dishonest, especially if it was an attempt to qualify for more surveys.
  • Avoid sites that want you to pay: All of the online surveys companies listed here are 100% free, and you’ll never be asked for credit card information. The only reason they might ask for bank account info is if you want to cash out with a bank transfer. A survey company asking for payment could be a scam.
  • Join more than one survey site: Brands partner with different survey companies, so you’ll have the most opportunities to get paid for online surveys if you sign up for multiple platforms.

Comments

  1. I’ve never done them before, similar to you I’m just not sure they’re worth my time. Something I may look into down the line though so I appreciate the review. Are there minimum dollar amounts to be reached before they send the cash or gift card?

    1. They’re all different but essentially yes, you have to reach a certain amount to get cash or gifts…kinda like Chuck-e-cheese’s for adults 🙂 It’s actually interesting to try them out, they ask some pretty wild questions haha

    1. Woah!!! Any idea what the survey was called? I’d be all over that.

  2. I have just started checking out Opinion Outpost and Pinecone Research just to find something that I could do when I was mindlessly watching TV or something. I will give them a try for a couple weeks and decide if it is ultimately worth my time or not. We will see!

    1. Let me know! I’d love it if you came back here and shared your experience with it 🙂

  3. Great stuff, I’ve had some bad luck in the past with these so I appreciate three good ones. Good way to make a couple bucks while I’m binge watching Netflix and need a blogging break haha

    1. Ha most people would roll their eyes at “blogging break”, but I know what you mean! It’s actually surprisingly more work than what it seems like. Not that I’m complaining. Have fun making the $$$!

  4. I joined one of these survey companies and completed several surveys after reading about them on another blog. After several hours of dutifully answering questions I worked out that I was earning about AU$5 an hour. I don’t know whether you get paid more than that in the US but for that rate, and the boredom of doing the surveys, I decided “naaaaaaaaa”.

    1. I’m with you, it’s not my thing. However – I’d be more than willing to bet that there are people out there who enjoy these!

  5. I appreciate your “some are legit, some aren’t” line. Whenever I see a blog article for “500+ ways to make $1000 in a day” or something like that, I just roll my eyes. Nothing in life (and ESPECIALLY finances) comes that easy. Thanks for the down to earth post! I’ll have to check some of these out.

    1. Yep – there are no easy roads to making money! Even these surveys took a little bit of thought, especially the Opinion Outpost survey with all the political questions. No problem on the down to earth post – tbh I’m not trying to get rich off of survey posts haha

  6. I remember doing one of these things (I forgot which company) but I think I became frustrated with the payout minimum and that I would have had to do so much just to get to the minimum. I wasn’t sure it was worth my time and I appreciate the review. I’m always trying to learn how to make side income and looking to allocate my time to the highest value adding projects!

    1. I would definitely say it’s not worth EVERYONE’s time. I couldn’t sit down and do them for a long period of time (I think I have ADHD), but they would be perfect for someone that can just zone out and make some extra money.

  7. Just like you when I was younger I joined many ‘paid survey’ websites in the hope of making some big bucks… I just wasted a lot of time and rendered my old email address unusable from all the spam.
I no longer use or have try to signup for any of these survey website. I do however complete surveys for ‘ShopperThoughts”, which comes through a few times a month and take 5-20 minutes to complete and pays anywhere between 50-250 Tesco clubcard point. As I collect these and can convert them into restaurant vouchers they equate to about £2-10, so they’re total worth the time for me.
I’ll also do the odd customer satistfaction survey for the chance to win a product or cash prize, they generally don’t take long and I’d rather the chance of winning big than a few pence.

    1. Yeah it’s definitely not a big bucks type of thing. It’s an easy way to make a few bucks an hour extra. I definitely see it being useful for people that are bored and want to make some money from the couch. I’ll be sure to check out “Shopper Thoughts”…seems interesting!

  8. We use Mintvine and Univox, and make an extra couple hundred a year with them. Its not the best way to male money, but if we are just sitting watching Netflix anyway its a couple extra bucks.

  9. From your monthly income statements, it looks like you’re making $100-200 a month in surveys, which is awesome! Approximately how many hours a month are you putting into surveys to get that type of yield? Of the online surveys you recommend, are there any in particular that have been more successful for you than others?
